Where to live in Koh Samui: six areas compared

It depends on how much quiet you want and how close you need to be to hospitals, shops and the airport. Bophut is calmer, with services close by, and Chaweng is the busy centre. Lamai is a long drive from the airport. Maenam, Bang Rak and Choeng Mon each suit a narrower need.

Where to live in Koh Samui depends on how much quiet you want and how often you need the airport, a hospital or a large shop. Bophut, Maenam and Choeng Mon are the quieter areas. Chaweng is the busy centre. Lamai is the furthest from the airport and from the private hospitals named in this guide.

This Koh Samui areas guide compares Bophut, Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam, Bang Rak and Choeng Mon on the same criteria: beach and pace, noise, road distance to the airport, hospitals, schools, shops and seasons. Distances between areas are map estimates from 23 October 2026, given as ranges because they change with the starting point. Distances for The Astra Samui come from the developer.

At a glance

  • Bophut: a quieter area with Fisherman’s Village for dining, Wattanapat Hospital and an international school in the same area.
  • Chaweng: the busy centre, with big shops and hospitals close and the airport a short drive away.
  • Lamai: a busy town on the south-east coast with its own supermarkets and a school, about 14 to 17 km from the airport.
  • Maenam: quiet and further west, with its own supermarket and a longer drive to the airport and the hospitals.
  • Bang Rak: close to the airport, around Big Buddha Beach.
  • Choeng Mon: a quieter beach area on the north-east, also close to the airport.

How to choose an area

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, after Phuket, with an area of about 228.7 km². A ring road runs around much of the island, and most journeys between areas follow it.

Start with your own routine, not with the beach. These are the criteria we use below:

  • Beach and pace: how busy the area is. We follow the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) newsroom article of 19 May 2021, which describes Chaweng and Lamai as the busier beaches and Bophut, Mae Nam and Choeng Mon as the more peaceful ones. It does not mention Bang Rak.
  • Noise: busier areas usually mean more traffic and evening activity. It also depends on the street, so visit before you decide.
  • Airport: the road distance to Samui Airport, which its information site places in the north of the island.
  • Hospitals: the road distance to the nearest of four private hospitals named in this guide (Wattanapat Hospital, Thai Inter Hospital, Samui International Hospital and Bangkok Hospital Samui). Other hospitals and clinics exist, so these figures show the four we name, not every option.
  • Schools: where the international schools we can verify are.
  • Shops: the nearest large supermarket or shopping centre we name.
  • Seasons: rain, which we cover in a separate section.

For the distances between areas, we took two or three points in each area, for example the two ends of a beach, and measured the road distance with OpenStreetMap routing on 23 October 2026. Where the results differ, we show the range, rounded to the whole kilometre. These are estimates without traffic, not surveyed distances. They show how areas compare, not exact journey times, and a different starting point can move a figure by a kilometre or two.

Bophut and Fisherman’s Village

TAT describes Bophut as one of the more peaceful and laid-back beaches. Fisherman’s Village is mapped as a walking street with restaurants. According to the developer, it is 850 m from The Astra Samui.

From Bophut to Samui Airport it is about 6 to 8 km by road, depending on whether you start at Fisherman’s Village or at the western end of the beach. That is further than from Chaweng, Choeng Mon or Bang Rak, so Bophut suits you better if you fly now and then than if you fly every week.

Services are close. Wattanapat Hospital gives its address as 555 Moo 1, Bo Phut, and is about 2 to 3 km from Bophut by road. The large Big C on the ring road is about 3 km away. The International School of Samui lists its address in Bophut and describes itself as a traditional British school with classes from Early Years to Sixth Form.

Choose Bophut for a calm base with daily needs near. Look elsewhere if you want the airport within minutes or a busier beach town. Our guide to living in Bophut covers an ordinary week there.

Chaweng

TAT describes Chaweng as one of the busier beaches. According to the developer, Chaweng Beach is 6.3 km from The Astra Samui. Chaweng has large shops close by: Central Samui, a department store, stands on Chaweng Beach Road, and a Lotus’s supermarket is in Chaweng Yai, both as mapped on OpenStreetMap.

From the middle of the beach, three of the four hospitals are within about 4 km by road. Samui International Hospital is mapped in northern Chaweng, Bangkok Hospital Samui gives its address as 57 Taweeratphakdee Road, and Thai Inter Hospital is in the Chaweng Yai area. Samui Airport is about 3 km from Central Samui and closer at the northern end of the beach, so along the beach it ranges from about 1 to 5 km.

The two international schools we cite are in Bophut and in Maret, near Lamai, not in Chaweng. If you have children, check the schools before the apartment. The International Schools Association of Thailand keeps a directory of its member schools if you want to compare more.

Chaweng fits you if you want restaurants, shops and services within a short drive and quick access to the airport. If you want quiet, look at the street and the hour: a busy area can have calm side roads, but you will notice the traffic.

Lamai

TAT puts Lamai in the same busier group as Chaweng. Lamai is a town in its own right on the south-east coast, and it has its own supermarkets: OpenStreetMap shows a Lotus’s and a Tops there, both within about 3 km of the beach hotels.

The trade-off is distance. Samui Airport is about 14 to 17 km by road from Lamai, the longest of the six areas. The nearest of the four hospitals is Bangkok Hospital Samui, about 8 to 10 km away. Lamai International School gives an address in Maret and describes a British curriculum for ages 3 to 11. For older children and for specialist care, ask what is available and how far you would drive.

Lamai works as a self-contained town if you do not need the airport or a hospital often. It is a poor fit if you travel every few weeks.

Maenam

TAT groups Mae Nam, also written Maenam, with the more peaceful and laid-back beaches. It lies on the north coast, west of Bophut.

The airport is about 9 to 13 km by road, depending on where in Maenam you start. Wattanapat Hospital is about 4 to 7 km away. OpenStreetMap shows a Lotus’s supermarket in Mae Nam village, and the large Big C is about 5 to 8 km away. The International School of Samui is in Bophut, the next area to the east.

Maenam is for people who put quiet first and do not mind driving to Bophut for healthcare and for larger shops. If you want a short airport run, look east.

Bang Rak and Choeng Mon

These two sit on the north-east, close to the airport.

Big Buddha Beach is in Bang Rak. TAT calls the nearby Big Buddha temple a major local landmark and says the beach is commonly called Big Buddha Beach. Bang Rak is among the areas closest to Samui Airport, about 2 to 4 km by road. The nearest of the four hospitals is about 4 to 5 km away. Large shops are further: the nearest we name is Lotus’s in Chaweng Yai, about 4 to 5 km away.

Choeng Mon is among the quieter beaches in TAT’s grouping. According to the developer, Choeng Mon Beach is 8.3 km from The Astra Samui. From the beach it is about 4 to 5 km to the airport, about 4 to 5 km to Samui International Hospital and more than 5 km to Central Samui.

Choose these areas if short airport transfers matter most. Both have fewer large shops close by than Chaweng or Bophut, so expect to drive for a big supermarket.

Comparison table

Area (points measured) Pace (TAT) Road to Samui Airport Nearest of the four hospitals Nearest large shop we name
Bophut (Fisherman’s Village to west end of beach) Quieter 6 to 8 km Wattanapat, 2 to 3 km Big C, about 3 km
Chaweng (north end to south end of beach) Busier 1 to 5 km Samui International or Bangkok Hospital Samui, 2 to 3 km Central Samui, on Chaweng Beach Road
Lamai (beach hotels and village) Busier 14 to 17 km Bangkok Hospital Samui, 8 to 10 km Lotus’s and Tops, within about 3 km
Maenam (east end to west end) Quieter 9 to 13 km Wattanapat, 4 to 7 km Lotus’s in Mae Nam, within about 3 km
Bang Rak (fish market to village) Not rated 2 to 4 km Wattanapat, Thai Inter or Samui International, 4 to 5 km Lotus’s in Chaweng Yai, 4 to 5 km
Choeng Mon (beach) Quieter 4 to 5 km Samui International, 4 to 5 km Central Samui, more than 5 km

Road distances from OpenStreetMap routing, 23 October 2026, without traffic, from two or three points in each area and rounded to the whole kilometre. A different starting point can move a figure by a kilometre or two. Pace follows the TAT newsroom article of 19 May 2021. Large shops here means the supermarkets and shopping centres named in this guide, so smaller shops will be nearer in every area. Hospitals are the four named in this guide.

Seasons

The official seasonal classification of Thailand treats the southern east coast, where Koh Samui lies, as one region. According to it, abundant rain continues there until the end of the year, and November is the wettest month. It does not split rainfall by area on the island, so we cannot rank these areas by rain.

The wet months still change daily life, so visit in the season you expect to live here and ask residents what changes.

Where The Astra Samui is

The Astra Samui is a low-rise, resort-style condominium in Bophut. It has 237 residences in 3 buildings (A, B and C), with apartments of about 26–73 m². According to the developer, completion is planned for Q4 2028. Prices start from THB 3,700,000 (about €98,000, NBP average rate of 23 October 2026).

The developer gives these distances from the project:

  • Bophut Beach: about 300 m
  • Fisherman’s Village: 850 m
  • Wattanapat Hospital: 1.8 km
  • Big C: 2.4 km
  • International School Samui: 3.3 km
  • Samui International Airport: 7.3 km

These are the developer’s figures for the project, so they differ from the area ranges above, which start from points inside each area. Treat them as a guide and check the journeys yourself.

Questions and answers

What is the best area to live in Koh Samui?

There is no single best area, because the areas trade quiet against convenience. Bophut suits people who want a calmer base with a hospital, shops and a school nearby. Chaweng suits people who want shops and restaurants close and a short drive to the airport. Maenam and Choeng Mon are quieter. Lamai is a town of its own on the south-east coast, but a long drive from the airport.

How do Bophut, Chaweng and Lamai differ for living?

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Chaweng and Lamai as busier beaches and Bophut as one of the more peaceful ones. By road, Chaweng is about 1 to 5 km from Samui Airport depending on where you start, Bophut about 6 to 8 km and Lamai about 14 to 17 km (map estimates, October 2026). The four private hospitals named in this guide are all in Bophut or Chaweng, so Lamai is further from them.

Which area of Koh Samui is closest to the airport?

Bang Rak, Choeng Mon and the northern end of Chaweng are the closest of the six areas, at roughly 1 to 5 km by road. Bophut is about 6 to 8 km, Maenam about 9 to 13 km and Lamai about 14 to 17 km. These are map estimates from 23 October 2026 and exclude traffic, so allow more time at busy hours.

Which areas of Koh Samui are quiet?

The Tourism Authority of Thailand describes Bophut, Maenam and Choeng Mon as the more peaceful and laid-back beaches. Quiet still depends on the street, so visit an area in the evening and at weekends before you commit.
