Living on Koh Samui

Living in Bophut, Koh Samui: what everyday life is like

Bophut is a calm, practical base on the north coast of Koh Samui. You get a swimmable beach, the restaurants of Fisherman’s Village, supermarkets, private hospitals and an international school within a short drive, and the airport is not far. It is quieter than Chaweng and busier than the villages further west.

Bophut has a calm beach, the restaurants of Fisherman’s Village and most everyday services a short drive away. It is busier than the villages to the west and calmer than Chaweng, which is why many people planning longer stays pick it.

This guide is for someone thinking of living here, not for a holiday visitor. It follows an ordinary week: the beach, food and errands, healthcare, schools, getting around and the seasons. Distances from The Astra Samui come from the developer. Everything else about the island has a source listed at the end.

Bophut at a glance

Bophut lies on the north coast of Koh Samui, which is Thailand’s second-largest island, after Phuket. The coast here faces Koh Phangan across the water. Samui Airport, privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, is on the northern part of the island near Bophut.

What Bophut looks like day to day:

  • Pace: a residential and holiday mix. Evenings are lively in Fisherman’s Village and quiet a few streets back.
  • Beach: a long bay facing Koh Phangan, with a stretch of sand along most of it.
  • Services: supermarkets, private hospitals and an international school are all a short drive away.
  • Airport: 7.3 km from The Astra Samui, according to the developer.

If you are still choosing between parts of the island, our Koh Samui vs Phuket comparison explains how Samui works as a whole, and the Bophut location page maps the area around the project.

Fisherman’s Village and the beach

Fisherman’s Village is the old centre of Bophut: a narrow street of wooden shophouses along the beach, now mostly restaurants, cafés, small hotels and shops. It is where you will meet friends for dinner, buy a coffee in the morning and take visitors on their first evening.

On Friday evenings the main street becomes a walking street market, with food stalls, clothes, crafts and live music. It is the busiest night of the week. If you live nearby you will either love it or plan your Friday around it, so check how close a home is to the market street before you buy. From The Astra Samui, Fisherman’s Village is 850 m, according to the developer.

The beach itself is quiet for most of the day. People swim, walk the bay at sunset and eat at the beach restaurants in the evening. Bophut Beach is about 300 m from the project, according to the developer. Do not expect surf.

Food, shopping and errands

You can live in Bophut without going far for the basics. A typical week might look like this:

  • Daily food: Thai street food, small local restaurants and international places in and around Fisherman’s Village. Fresh fruit and vegetables come from local markets and roadside stalls.
  • Weekly shopping: large supermarkets on the ring road. Big C is 2.4 km and Lotus’s 3.7 km from The Astra Samui, according to the developer.
  • Malls: Central Samui, 6 km away, has a department store, cinema and international brands. Haven Samui Community Mall is 6.9 km away.
  • Everything else: pharmacies, laundries, phone shops, gyms and hardware stores line the main roads, as they do across the island.

Imported food is easy to find but costs more than local produce, so most residents end up with a mix.

Healthcare and schools nearby

Hospitals. Several private hospitals serve the north and east of the island. According to the developer, Wattanapat Hospital is 1.8 km from The Astra Samui, Thai Inter Hospital 3.6 km and Bangkok Hospital Samui, part of the BDMS hospital group, 6.1 km. For routine care and emergencies you are covered locally. For complex or specialist treatment, ask the hospital what it handles on site and when it refers patients to the mainland or to Bangkok. Check that your health insurance covers the hospitals you are likely to use.

Schools. The International School of Samui has its campus in Bophut. Its website describes a British school with classes from Early Years through to Sixth Form, and refers to Cambridge and Edexcel. The developer gives its distance from the project as 3.3 km. Lamai International School, on the south-east coast, is 12.9 km away. The International Schools Association of Thailand keeps a directory of its member schools if you want to compare. If you are moving with children, ask each school about places, age groups and the curriculum before you choose a home.

Getting around and to the airport

Around the island. A ring road circles Koh Samui, so most places are reachable in one direction or the other. Most residents use a car or a scooter. Taxis and the shared pick-up trucks known as songthaews also run, but they are less practical for daily school runs and shopping. Traffic builds up around Chaweng and on Friday evenings near Fisherman’s Village. Before you drive, check what licence you need and that your insurance covers you.

The airport. Samui Airport is close, which is a real practical plus. Bangkok Airways runs it, and routes change by season. Many international visitors connect through Bangkok, so check the current timetable for the cities you will fly from.

Boats. Ferries to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao leave from piers around the island. Lomprayah, for example, lists departures from Bangrak Pier, east of Bophut, as well as from Nathon on the west coast. Nathon is also where boats from Don Sak Pier on the mainland arrive.

Seasons in Bophut

Koh Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand, and its rainy months differ from much of Thailand. According to the official classification of Thai seasons, the rain on this coast does not end in mid October as it does further north. Heavy rain continues to the end of the year, and November is usually the wettest month.

For a resident, this matters in a few ways:

  • Planning your time: if you plan to spend the European winter on Samui, expect showers in November and December.
  • Work on the apartment: repairs, painting and deliveries are easier to schedule in the drier months.
  • The busy months: Fisherman’s Village, the beach and the roads are busier in the main holiday periods, and quieter in the wettest weeks.

Weather changes from year to year, so treat this as a typical rhythm, not a forecast. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes current forecasts and warnings.

Who Bophut suits

Bophut tends to suit people who want a settled routine rather than a holiday atmosphere every night. That includes couples spending several months a year on the island, people working remotely who need a quiet home with services nearby, and families who want to be close to an international school. It may suit you less if you want late-night bars on your doorstep, or complete seclusion away from other people.

Questions and answers

Is Bophut a good place to live on Koh Samui?

It suits people who want a quieter base with everyday services close by. Bophut has a calm beach, restaurants in Fisherman’s Village, supermarkets and private hospitals within a short drive, and the airport nearby. If you want nightlife on your doorstep, Chaweng is livelier; if you want more seclusion, the villages further west are quieter.

How far is Bophut from Samui Airport?

Not far. The airport sits on the north-east of the island, close to Bophut, so most of Bophut is a short drive away. Allow extra time on Friday evenings and in the high season, when the roads around Fisherman’s Village are busier.

Is there an international school near Bophut?

Yes. The International School of Samui has its campus in Bophut. According to its website it is a British school with classes from Early Years to Sixth Form. Lamai International School, on the south-east coast, is the other option families often look at. Check places and the curriculum with each school directly.

When is the rainy season in Bophut?

Koh Samui is on the Gulf of Thailand side, where the rain lasts longer than in most of the country. According to the official classification of Thai seasons, heavy rain on this coast continues to the end of the year, and November is usually the wettest month.

Do I need a car or scooter to live in Bophut?

For daily life, most residents use one. You can walk to the beach and Fisherman’s Village from many parts of Bophut, but supermarkets, hospitals and schools are spread along the ring road. Taxis and shared pick-up trucks run too, but they are less convenient for regular errands.
